Make Money With Twitter (5 Monetization Models)

With Twitter’s recent API addition, there is potential for many new applications to be built off the Twitter back-end (although, not quite yet). Twitter usernames are essentially keywords used for these applications built on the Twitter platform — and Twitter username squatting is happening. The question is, how will these new businesses monetize — and how will Twitter itself monetize:
The power in any advertising-supported website, publication, TV show, etc, is community (readers, viewers, listeners, etc). Build a great service, get people to use it (or read, listen, view) and you can then send out specific ads to those users. Example 1: Have a Twitter username for “Knicks” (i.e. NY Knicks, a basketball team in the NBA). People add that user as their friend — the “Knicks” username pushes out any Knicks news… the minute it happens! Ditto on sports scores — if a Knicks game is going on, it’ll send out the score during the game to keep you alerted, if you want to be. If you can get 10,000 Knicks fans on your list — then you can either:
1) Put an ad in any blank space at the end of your 140-character messages — i.e. “Drink an ice cold, refreshing Pepsi.”
2) Send out an advertisement every 10th or 50th (whatever you learn to be OK with your users) twitter. Thus, I may receive 10 twitters of news announcements, and the 11th is an advertisement for Grey Goose vodka.

3) Pay-Per-Twitter Message — If there was a username called “NYCtechJobs” — any person looking for a tech job in NYC could be a friend of this list, and be notified instantly of any new NYC tech jobs. Where would those jobs come from? Initially possibly just from Craigs List, Monster, Hot Jobs, etc … but then say you have 2,000 users that are the friends of “NYCtechJobs”, that means you have 2,000 prospective tech employees in the NYC area. A company would love to get their latest tech job out to those prospects, so they can find a hire — thus, they go to a web page you have setup, and they are able to create a message up to 140 characters (likely include a URL to full job details) with some details on the job. You can charge the employer for posting this.
Ditto with a list (er, username) like “NYCfurniture”. People could pay to broadcast their message to all of the friends of “NYCfurniture”.
4) Charge for access to your Twitter messages — Your username can be private and only your friends can receive/view your twitters. Thus, if you had valuable/timely information — you could have a subscription-based service where you charge $X for people to be your friend, and then they would have access to your twitters. Thus, a celebrity could charge for this — or a newspaper might do this to give you access to the news first — or some blogger that finds online shopping deals could send them to you … basically, if the user wanted to be “in the know” for whatever offering, they’d pay $X for access (per week or month). Note: You’d have to verify their subscriptions — and if they haven’t paid for the month, you’d remove them as a friend from your Twitter account.
5) Commissions on user purchases — Setup a service that allows users to buy products through this. User would need to setup an account with you with their credit card (or PayPal info, or a deposit into this proposed payment service) stored. I imagine a user could be browsing Wired magazine and be able to quickly purchase a subscription for $10 by ripping out their cell phone, Twittering a code like “d buy wired”, with a confirmation coming back to the user and them approving the confirmation possibly using a password, then the transaction occurring.
The biggest question on everyone’s minds is what Evan Williams is thinking. They’re opening up their back-end to allow the development of applications on the Twitter platform (which I think is real smart, because people are going to build useful applications for Twitter users — and everyone will be using Twitter in some capacity more often) … but will Evan plan to charge these companies that are building apps? Will Evan not want these apps monetizing themselves? How is Evan planning to monetize Twitter — or will he sell and leave that to a Yahoo/Microsoft/News Corp to figure out how to extract value out of the massive userbase (like his sale of Blogger to Google)? I don’t think Evan knows the answers quite yet — he’s just focused on building a great application for users.

Twitter To Make Money In 2010 With ‘Non-Traditional’ Ads

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Biz Stone says next year is when Twitter will start making money, and “non-traditional” advertising is how.

The Twitter co-founder, speaking to reporters in Tel Aviv Tuesday, said his company will “start making money” in 2010 and will unveil its plan early next year on how it will produce revenue through advertising. He declined to give details but said advertising will be “non-traditional.”

Still, Stone stressed the company mantra was that it was in no hurry to come up with a business plan, and needn’t be.

“There are no dates when we need to break even. We have plenty of money in the bank,” he said.

In September, Twitter received a new round of funding from investors including mutual fund giant T. Rowe Price and private equity firm Insight Venture Partners, which analysts said set the stage for an eventual initial public offering or sale.

According to a person familiar with the matter, the new funds totaled $100 million, theoretically valuing the company at $1 billion. Stone on Monday said Twitter may eventually go to the stock market for funding if necessary.

a. Strictly follow the rules mentioned in Adsense policies. You will always earn more revenue from Adsense by playing it clean.

b. Never modify the Google Adsense HTML code. If have trouble embedding AdSense code in your WordPress or Blogger template, take help of the AdSense support forums or send an email to your AdSense account manager.

c. Never ask your friends or visitors to click on your Google ads. Google takes click fraud very seriously. Do not include incentives of any kind on your site for users to click on your ads. Don't label Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements.".

d. Don't click on your own ads - Google is much smarter than you think and can discover invalid clicks through IP addresses, site navigation patterns, etc. If you working on a new design for your site, avoid reloading your pages (with AdSense) excessively. Many of the pages on this site display text ads from Google's AdWords program. To display these ads, a site must join Google's AdSense program. Joining is free, but not all sites are eligible to join. Once you're accepted, however, it's very simple to place the ads on your pages and to start generating revenue for your site.
AdSense will serve ads that are generally very relevant to the content of a particular page. Here are some tips based on my experiences so far with the AdSense program.

Tip #1: Don't put ads on empty pages.

When I reworked my site, I built a skeleton set of pages that had no content, just titles and some meta tags. I displayed ads on those pages, however. Although all you see are public service ads at first, the very act of displaying ads on a page causes the AdSense web crawler to quickly fetch that page for analysis. A page with good content will thus begin showing relevant paying ads fairly quickly.

If you don't have any content, then, Google will have to guess as what your page is about. It may guess wrong, and so the ads that it displays may not be relevant. You'll have to wait until Google re-crawls the site for the ads to correct themselves. Here is what Google had to say when I asked them about how often the AdSense crawler updates a site:

Thank you for taking the time to update your site. New ads will start appearing on your site the next time our crawler re-indexes your site. Unfortunately at this time, we are unable to control how often our crawlers index the content on your site. Crawling is done automatically by our bots. When new pages are added to your website or introduced to the AdSense program, our crawlers will usually get to them within 30 minutes. If you make changes to a page, however, it may take up to 2 or 3 weeks before the changes are reflected in our index. Until we are able to crawl your web pages, you may notice public service ads, for which you will not receive any earnings.

It's better to flesh out the page before you start displaying ads on it.

Tip #2: Don't be afraid to ask questions

If you're wondering about something, don't be afraid to ask Google. So far, they've always responded to my questions within a working day. There are two email addresses to use, depending on the type of question:

Their responses are always very polite, and they appreciate getting problem reports and suggestions.

Tip #3: Avoid non-English characters on English pages

This one is a bug, to be honest. My surname is French, and I prefer to write it out correctly with the accent grave on the first "e". Every page on my site would then include at least two accented letters, because my name shows up twice in the footer. On some pages my name shows up two or three more times.

Normally, this wouldn't be an issue. But on some pages the presence of the accented characters is enough to cause AdSense to display non-relevant ads in French. This happens whether the browser indicates a preference for French or not. When I reported this to Google, this is the answer they gave me:

Hello Eric, Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We are currently working as quickly as we can to address this problem. As soon as we have more information for you, we will email you again. We appreciate your patience. Sincerely, The Google Team

Until this is resolved, I've decided to strip out all accents except on the pages that are actually in French.

Tip #4: Check your keyword density

Although Google doesn't release exact details as to how they determine the ads to serve on a given page, they do tell us that it's the text content of the page that matters, not the meta tags. Before serving ads on a page, then, you might want to check its keyword density. A good, free tool for doing this is found here:

It’s obvious that if you don’t have a website or weblog then it’s going to be pretty tough to do business online. And I’m going to briefly tell you why the company provided website will never work to build your business online.

The company provided website is useful as a tool to educate your prospects once you have already captured their information and they are in your campaign. That’s about it. The reason why you need your own website is because you HAVE to position yourself as different from everyone else. Otherwise, what reasons do people have to join you?

Remember the reasons why people would join you in your business? How different are you if you go and enter your name in a form to get the same website everyone else and their uncle has? You’re not very different. Furthermore, those websites are not capture pages. They do not generate leads. It is meant to squeeze a person’s information in the quickest and most effective way possible. Squeeze pages are well oiled funnels that lead a person directly to the desired action you want them to take. In this case, it is leaving their contact information in exchange for the information they want from you.

2. A content page. A content page is more like your typical full blown website. A content page is generally less productive at converting leads, but very useful for many reasons none the less. In particular when it comes to generating a certain type of traffic which I will be talking about later on. Not only that but you can load your content page with all sorts of ways to capture people’s emails and generate opt ins. Once you have the traffic…the possibilities are endless.

In order to do internet network marketing successful I suggest you personally create both of these different types of websites. Your priority however, is absolutely on a squeeze page.

If you just had a squeeze page, you could still get by A LOT better, but a full blown content website comes in very handy on the back end of your campaign. A content website is essential for one other task, and that is Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine Optimization is a term that stands for your website being ranked highly in the major search engines. Since search engines are getting very competitive now a days, the only way sites get ranked very highly at all is by having LOTS of relevant and targeted information.

Who is a netprenuer? Actually the word netpreneur brings images to mind of a young geek. A person in his early twenties who has the courage to break the conventional rules to build up an online business from scratch is our netpreneur. There was a time when netpreneurs were thought to be some kind of mythical creatures. They came from nowhere and made millions in the market. And that image is still itched out into the minds of many but to be honest these are just images. The reality is very different.

The majority of netpreneur are still young but they are not some kind of eccentric genius. Anyone can be a netprenuer these days. That is the result of easy access to internet and the desire of people to take some risk and start their own online business venture. Netpreneurs are like any other entrepreneurs. The only difference is that netpreneur as the name suggests is a special class of entrepreneur who has some special technical skills that could be used to earn money online. What is NETPRENEUR?

What’s a Netpreneur? You know..?

I wanna be a netpreneur.

What’s a ‘netpreneur’, I hear you ask? A netpreneur is an ’internet entrepreneur’.

When we think of internet entrepenuers, we think of the insanely-rich people that created Amazon, Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. Whilst it would be great to build an internationally-renowned website like these, it’s clearly out of reach for most of us.

This website deals with ‘netpreneurs’ who operate on a far less grandiose scale. For the purpose of this website, a ‘netpreneur’ is someone who is capable of financially sustaining his/her family and desired lifestyle via the World Wide Web.

There is an important distinction to make up front - my understanding of ’netpreneurs’ is that they are not necessarily rich people - in terms of dollars. I think that true ‘netpreneurs’ strive to control and protect a commodity that is much more important and valuable in this day and age than money - their time.

So, why do I want to be a ‘netpreneur’? Well, it’s quite simple. I don’t want to spend 8-12 hours slaving at work each day. I don’t want to get that sinking feeling in my stomach every Sunday evening in the knowledge that a full week of work awaits. I don’t want to dress up in a suit and tie each morning. I don’t want to endure traffic snarls or catch public transport on my way to and from work. I don’t want to compromise my lifestyle and family life for some faceless corporate job.

I want to be able to work where I want, when I want to, without being told what to do. I don’t want to make somebody else rich. Instead, I want to use my brains, creativity and innovativeness to ‘build something’ for myself. I want destiny to rest solely in my own hands and no-one else’s. And perhaps most importantly, I want to spend quality time with my family and my dog.

It sounds fantastic, but is it possible to spurn traditional employment and make a living on the web? Or is it a pipe dream? To tell you the truth, I’m not entirely sure whether it is possible or not - but I am on a journey of discovery to see if it can work out!

Certainly, the media would have us believe that there is an abundance of people out there making a fortune from the internet. Just watch Today Tonight or A Current Affair and you’ll likely come across a story or two about ordinary, everyday housewives who have made a million on ebay selling nicknacks from their third bedroom. Apparently, these success stories are a dime a dozen.

But from my experience thus far, it’s not just a matter of setting up shop and counting the money. There’s a lot of work involved….

I have learnt a lot thus far, and I suspect that my learning is only just the tip of the iceberg - there is much more learning to come, particularly as technology seems to change the landscape of this industry on a daily basis….

This website is designed to act as my ‘artificial intelligence’ - my knowledge resource. This website represents a place for me to record my tips and tricks and useful links for my own use and for others to use as well. Rather than writing reams of information, I have chosen to provide information in an abbreviated format, so that the information is actionable and can be read quickly (the netpreneur simply doesn’t have the time to read long articles).
